Syn: {Beside}, {Besides}.

Usage: These words, whether used as prepositions or adverbs,
have been considered strictly synonymous, from an
early period of our literature, and have been freely
interchanged by our best writers. There is, however, a
tendency, in present usage, to make the following
distinction between them: 1. That beside be used only
and always as a preposition, with the original meaning
"by the side of; " as, to sit beside a fountain; or
with the closely allied meaning "aside from", "apart
from", or "out of"; as, this is beside our present
purpose; to be beside one's self with joy. The
adverbial sense to be wholly transferred to the
cognate word. 2. That besides, as a preposition, take
the remaining sense "in addition to", as, besides all
this; besides the considerations here offered. "There
was a famine in the land besides the first famine."
--Gen. xxvi. 1. And that it also take the adverbial
sense of "moreover", "beyond", etc., which had been
divided between the words; as, besides, there are
other considerations which belong to this case. The
following passages may serve to illustrate this use of
the words:

Lovely Thais sits beside thee. --Dryden.
[1913 Webster]

Only be patient till we have appeased
The multitude, beside themselves with fear.
--Shak.
[1913 Webster]

It is beside my present business to enlarge on
this speculation. --Locke.
[1913 Webster]

Besides this, there are persons in certain
situations who are expected to be charitable.
--Bp. Porteus.
[1913 Webster]

May unfold me to him; there stand I in much
peril. --Shak.
[1913 Webster]

That man that does not know those things which
are of necessity for him to know is but an
ignorant man, whatever he may know besides.
--Tillotson.
[1913 Webster]

Note: See {Moreover}.
[1913 Webster] Besides

Besides \Be*sides"\, Beside \Be*side"\, adv. [OE. Same as
beside, prep.; the ending -s is an adverbial one, prop. a
genitive sign.]
1. On one side. [Obs.] --Chaucer. Shak.
[1913 Webster]

2. More than that; over and above; not included in the
number, or in what has been mentioned; moreover; in
addition.

--Gen. xix.
12.
[1913 Webster]

An Eugene living, as a C[ae]sar dead. --Pope.

Note: These sentences may be considered as elliptical.
[1913 Webster]

  • She is listening to the music这句话为什么要加to? - 知乎
譬如这句“She is listening to the music "中“listen"就是“to"的相关联动词。 针对句子阐释句子中词法,建议可以从以下视角来加深理解,并试着学以致用。 首先只需要记识住” listen to music "的固定表达方式,并以此为模板,类推出 listen to classical music listen to dad listen
  • I listen to the music. 是主谓结构还是主谓宾结构?
那么楼主的例子I listen to the music 本身不是一个规范的句子(当然根据具体语境也是有的),最好用现在进行时态: I am listening to the music 我正在听音乐。 根据主谓宾“什么做什么”怎么理解呢? “听”这个动作怎么作用在音乐上呢?
  • meaning - Listen to music vs. listen to the music - English . . .
The only difference is the definite article ('the') which means the second sentence refers to some specific music For example, as you put your iPod headphones on you might say "I am going to listen to music", meaning no particular music
  • I listen to the music. 是主谓结构还是主谓宾结构? - 知乎
    I listen to the music实际上是主+谓+介词短语作状语结构,listen是一个 不及物动词,后面不可直接跟宾语,其次介词to跟listen在一起不会构成新的词,意义上不会有变化,所以to the music是结合来看的,I listen是我听的意思,听什么? 音乐? 演讲? 还是大学的课程?
  • grammar - listen to that song? or listen that song? - English Language . . .
Do we say listen to that song (if I want to ask someone to listen to the song I forwarded?) Also do we refer to song as "music" listen to that music? or song is correct?
  • listen to music is an effective relax means语法错了吗?
要注意,这个句子里有三个动词:listen、is、relax。而英语的句子里,只能有一个动词。这句话的结构应该是主系表,谓语动词为is。 那么要改成正确的句子,首先主语可以改成Listening to music或者To listen to music。 表语部分可以改成,an effective means for relaxing oneself或者an effective relaxing means。
  • Listen or listening? - English Language Usage Stack Exchange
"Listen" is used fairly often as a noun, as another post on this site noted (The Phrase 'Take a Listen') As commentators on that post noted, whether or not that usage is too colloquial seems to be a matter of opinion Apparently, however, "listen" has been used as a noun for a couple of centuries
  • 忽然间感觉到疑惑英语中成分的划分是不是有些歧义呢? - 知乎
    主谓状结构 主语I,谓语am listening,状语to music。
  • Why is listen always followed by to in the command voice?
12 Listen, in contemporary usage, is not a transitive verb, so it cannot take a direct object meaning “the thing being heard” It is intransitive, and you must use a prepositional phrase headed by to, as in “listen to something”, in order to specify the thing being heard
