the name wintergreen is given to {
Gaultheria procumbens },
a low evergreen aromatic plant with oval leaves clustered at the top of a short stem ,
and bearing small white flowers followed by red berries ; --
called also {
checkerberry },
and sometimes ,
though improperly , {
partridge berry }.
